14 Home Remedies To Remove Milia (Milk Spots)

Milia, also known as milk spots, are keratin filled little white or yellowish bumps that mostly appear around and under the eyes . They can also appear on your cheeks, nose forehead and chest. These are keratin-filled cysts that are quite common in an infant, but can also affect people of all ages. In newborn babies, milia often disappear within a few weeks, but In adults, the condition may persist for months, even years.

Milia occurs when the skin cannot remove dead skin cells and skin pores get clogged due to accumulation of dead cells. Excessive secretion of sebum, hormonal changes, use of pore clogging heavy makeup, long-term use of steroid creams, prolong exposure to the sun rays,  blistering injuries and lack of skin  exfoliation are some common causes of milia.

Medically, a milia breakout is harmless, but it can be unattractive and reduce your skin beauty. However, here we have some best natural home remedies to get  rid of these ugly spots.

Natural Home Remedies To Remove Milia


1.  Aloe Vera

Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, skin soothing and skin soothing and healing properties of aloe vera are very beneficial in getting rid of milia. Apply the fresh extracted gel from an aloe vera leaf on affected areas. Leave there at least for one hour and then rinse off.

Alternatively you can also apply a mixture of  aloe vera gel and green tea. Take equal amounts of aloe vera gel and green tea and apply on mila at least for 20 minutes. Finally wash off with fresh water.

2. Honey, Oatmeal, Vanilla Extract and Sugar

To get rid of milia you can prepare a homemade scrub by mixing 2 tablespoons of honey,  3 tablespoons of raw oatmeal, 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil. With help of finger tips apply this mixture  on affected areas and rub at least for 5 minutes. Leave for 15 minutes and finally wash your face with lukewarm water, pat dry with clean towel and apply a good moisturizer.

3. Sugar, Lemon and Olive Scrub

Take 2 tablespoons of sugar, juice of half lemon and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Mix all the these ingredients and gently scrub your face with this mixture. Leave for 15-20 minutes and wash off, followed by a good moisturizer.

4. Pomegranate Peel Powder and Lemon juice

To get rid of milia,  roast the peels of pomegranate, until they become dark brown. Now grind them into a powder. Take 2 tablespoons  of this powder and mix with 1 tablespoon of lemon to make a paste. Rub this paste on affected areas and leave it for 15- 20 minutes. For best results repeat this remedy 3-4 times a week.

5. Sandalwood and Rose Water

A mixture of rose water and sandalwood is considered very effective in getting rid of milia. It removes the excess oil and dead cells from your skin and reduces milia as well. Take 1 tablespoon of sandalwood powder and mix it with 1 teaspoon of rose water to form a smooth paste. Apply this on affected areas and leave for 15-20 minutes. Finally wash your face with fresh water and repeat this remedy on a daily basis until you get the desired results.

6. Fenugreek Leaves

Antiseptic,  anti-inflammatory and anti oxidant properties of fenugreek leaves are very helpful in getting rid of milia. Crush some fenugreek leaves and mix with some water to make a thick paste. Apply this paste to milia affected areas and then wash off after half an hour. Besides milia, fenugreek leaves are also very helpful in  getting rid of acne breakouts, blackheads, boils and blemishes

7.  Tea Tree Oil

Application of tea tree oil is an other excellent remedy in getting rid of milia. Simply clean your face and apply a little amount of tea tree oil on affected areas only once a day. For best results, apply this at night before going to bed and wash your skin in the morning.

8.  Oatmeal, lemon juice and Yogurt

Take 1 tablespoons of oatmeal, one tablespoon of lemon juice,  2 tablespoons of yogurt and 1 teaspoon of olive oil.  Mix  all the ingredients and apply it on affected areas.  Massage for 3-5 minutes and then rinse off after 15 minutes. For best results repeat this 2-3 times a week.

9. Baking Soda, Cinnamon and Lemon Juice

To cure the problem of skin milia, take 1 tablespoon of baking soda , 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix all the ingredients and add some water to make a thick paste. Apply it on the affected areas. Leave until it dries. Later, wash off with lukewarm water. For best results, follow this remedy 2-3 times a week.

10. Milk and Rice Scrub

An other effective remedy to cure milia is to make a scrub by soaking one tablespoon of rice in some milk for 3-4 hours. Then grind them in a grinder or blender to make a thick bur slightly coarse paste. Apply this paste on affected areas and gently scrub for few minutes. Finally wash off with fresh water and pat dry your skin followed by a good moisturizer.

11. Lemon and Salt Scrub

The citric acid and rich contents of vitamin C in lemon help a lot  to open the skin pores and dries the excess oil. A scrub made from lemon juice and salt is very helpful to remove milia.

Squeeze a lemon and add a pinch of salt to it. Soak a cotton ball in it and dab on affected areas. Gently massage for 3-5 minutes.  Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Then, rise off with lukewarm water and pat dry your skin. Finally apply a good moisturizer to prevent excessive dryness.

12. Castor Oil and Baking Soda

A combination of castor oil and baking soda is also very beneficial in getting rid of milia. Take one teaspoon of castor oil and mix with enough baking soda to make a thick paste and apply on the affected areas. Massage for 3-5 minutes and Leave it on for 2-3 hours and then wash it off. For best results repeat this on a daily basis until you get the desired results.

13.  Retinol 

Retinol is commonly used to fight acne and signs of aging but Topical application of retinol cream is also very beneficial to cure the problem of milia.  Retinol has exfoliating properties that keep your skin soft and clear. Use a targeted retinol lotion or cream and apply it directly to the area of your skin affected by the milia. Apply a pea-sized drop of retinol to the milia-covered area of your skin preferably before going to bed.
Do not apply retinol to the upper eyelid since it can cause irritation and damage if it gets into your eyes.

14. Niacin and Biotin (Vitamin B3 and Vitamin B7)


Sometimes deficiency of Niacin or Biotin may also lead to milia. You should eat foods rich in niacin and biotin or take supplements of niacin and biotin but after consulting a good dermatologist or doctor. After diagnosis the exact cause behind milia, He/she will prescribe the daily doses of Niacin or Biotin.

Some Precautions and Important Tips about Milia
(i) Always be careful about milia affected area of upper eyelids and don't let go the material of any home remedy get into your eyes otherwise it can cause irritation or pain.
(ii) Don't try to scratch away the milia because scratching them not only damage your skin but may also leave a scar.
(iii) To get rid of dead skin cells, exfoliate  your skin at least one a week by using a mild scrubber.
(iv) Try to drink plenty of water and fresh fruits juices in order to flush out all the toxins from your body.
(v) Avoid alcohol, coffee, carbonated drinks(coca cola, pepsi, etc), chocolates and heavy oily foods.
(vi)Avoid over exposure to UV Sun rays and before going out in sun, don't forget to apply good sunscreen containing  SPF 15.
(vii) Avoid use of heavy make-up products and before going to bed don't forget to remove all kinds of make-up products. Apply  a good moisturizer on a daily basis.
